Early in 2020, when lockdown orders shocked the general public, the first reaction of many people was to grab supplies from the supermarket before they ran out. Top of the list, apparently, was toilet paper. Looking at the empty shelves at the supermarket, I was grateful that we had some spare supplies at home.

It has become obvious that supply lines are part of a fragile, delicately-balanced system that can be disrupted in many ways. Knowing that, I always aim to have in stock three of anything we rely on rather than just one reserve unit. Having three of everything in the larder provides a buffer against supply disruptions of all kinds, big or small.

Back in the mad rush of 2020, I was grateful to see that, even though the frozen pizzas had mostly disappeared from the supermarket, our favorite vegan pizzas were still sitting there available, unfavored by general demand.

Sudden emergencies can arise for many reasons and a little preparedness leads to moments of gratitude instead of frustration.

In the case of a power outage, the water system often stops running as well. All of a sudden, no water and not even a way to heat a can of soup on the stove.

Regular batteries are a big favorite for emergency supplies as you can rely on them for battery lamps and flashlights even when a power outage takes away your ability to recharge rechargeable batteries.

If you want to be really serious about preparedness and prepare for all events, you might aim to have enough supplies to last through a month of possible chaos on the streets without ever having to step outside the door!

Whenever I see a preparedness list of essentials to keep at home, I always check to see it they have thought of anything not already on my list.
