The Spiritual Meaning of Moles, Skin Tags, and Birthmarks

The Spiritual Meaning of Moles, Skin Tags, and Birthmarks

By Julie Peters

Posted on September 17, 2025

Uncover hidden messages in skin pigmentations: protection needs, hormonal shifts, family legacies. Use intuitive questions on moles, tags, and birthmarks to connect with your inner wisdom.

Moles, skin tags, and birthmarks are skin pigmentations: clusters of cells that create distinctly colored shapes on your skin. While they are usually benign, it’s a good idea to have them checked by a doctor to make sure there are no signs of anything serious (especially if they itch, hurt, or bleed).

Beyond the basics of these common skin pigmentations, let’s uncover the spiritual meanings of moles, skin tags, and birthmarks.

The Spiritual Meaning of Skin

When discussing our skin, it is helpful to remember that the skin is the body’s border—the boundary between the self and the outside world. Our skin is also the organ of touch and how we experience the world. Moles, skin tags, and birthmarks can represent a “clustering up” of the skin: a concentrated area of skin that could, metaphorically, represent an intensified desire to reach out and touch or perhaps draw in and protect. They could also represent a need for protection and for the bolstering of internal borders.

Consider the following questions:

  • Do you feel that your boundaries are currently being held and respected by the people in your life?
  • Were your boundaries somehow violated when the pigmentations first appeared?
  • What was happening in your life when you first noticed the pigmentations on your body?
  • How do you react to touch and sensation since noticing the pigmentations?

The Spiritual Meaning of Moles

Moles are small areas of darker pigmentation on the skin that can be large or small, raised or flat. They can develop at any time, though they are known to appear when the body is experiencing hormonal changes, such as in pregnancy.

Consider the following questions:

  • What was happening in your life when the mole first appeared?
  • Are you currently making a concentrated effort or embarking on a focused intention, like the major undertaking of pregnancy?
  • Is there something you’d like to shield yourself from but feel unable to for some reason?
  • Is there a particular event or major life transition making a “mark” on you?
  • Has something in your life recently “darkened,” growing in both intensity and severity?

The Spiritual Meaning of Skin Tags

Skin tags are similar to moles but tend to be raised and appear in areas of the body that experience more friction, like the groin or underneath the breasts. Like moles, they can appear during times of hormonal change and are especially associated with insulin resistance, which is often related to diabetes.

Consider the following questions:

  • Is there something “reaching out” from under your skin, like a need to ask for help or do something differently?
  • Is there a source of irritation in your life that the skin tag could be highlighting?
  • Is there something (or someone) that is asking for your attention—whether you want to give it or not?
  • Do you feel like energy is being blocked in the part of your body where the skin tag appears?
  • Has something recently changed for you, either physically or hormonally, that the skin tag could symbolize?

The Spiritual Meaning of Birthmarks

Birthmarks appear at birth or within the first month of a person’s life. They are usually moles, malformed pigment cells, or blood vessels. Some people believe that any birthmarks present at birth might speak to past lives and/or family system issues—a trace from a past life or a “mark” left by a family legacy.

Consider the following questions:

  • Do you ever sense that your emotions, instincts, or inner wisdom originate from somewhere else—maybe even from a past life?
  • Do you identify yourself as the “cycle breaker” in your family—someone who chooses to forge a different path?
  • Do you feel as though pain, illness, or trauma in your life was passed down to you, either from your family or your culture?

Locations of the Pigmentation

The location of your skin pigmentation can provide insight into its deeper meaning to your personal journey. The right side of the body holds action, movement, masculine energies, while feminine energies, including emotions, rest, and dreams, are located on the left side.

Additionally, the front of the body represents looking ahead at the future, as well as how you are perceived by others. The back of the body, on the other hand, indicates the past, what’s hidden, or what you try to put behind you.

Consider the following questions:

  • Where are the pigmentations located on your body?
  • What are the functions of the body part(s) on which the pigmentations appear?
  • What is your relationship like with this part of your body?

Take your time to sit with these thoughts and ideas, then make an effort to listen to what your intuition is telling you about the spiritual meaning of your moles, skin tags, and birth marks.

How Awe Rewires the Brain

How Awe Rewires the Brain

by Owen Waters

Post on November 8, 2025

Have you ever looked up at the night sky and felt a wave of expansiveness or wonder? Or stood before a mountain range and felt something stir deep within you? That feeling is awe – and it’s far more than just a nice emotion.

Experiencing awe reduces activity in the brain’s default mode network – the part that’s linked with self-focus and overthinking. Awe shifts us out of ourselves and expands our perspective and it also lowers stress and brings a greater sense of calm.

Awe even has biological benefits. Studies show it reduces levels of inflammatory markers – these are molecules associated with conditions like heart disease, arthritis, cancer, diabetes, and inflammatory bowel disease.

It also increases humility, kindness, happiness, and our sense of connection with others. Remarkably, it can even expand our sense of time.

When we gaze at something immense – a starry sky, a powerful symphony, an act of compassion – we might feel small by comparison. Psychologists call this self-diminishment.

Yet paradoxically, awe also makes us feel larger and more connected to a greater whole, a phenomenon known as enlarged connectedness.

This connection can be with all living beings when we witness kindness, or a spiritual sense of unity when we feel awe in nature.

Astronaut Dr Edgar Mitchell, from the Apollo 14 mission, described such an experience. As he looked back at Earth from space, he was overcome by a sense of “universal connectedness.” He later founded the Institute of Noetic Sciences to explore our inner world and our interconnectedness with all life.

If you want to feel expanded, connected, calm, more humble, and more appreciative of life, others, and nature, then make awe a regular part of your life.

In a few words: Look up. Slow down. Feel connected.

Here are a few ways to invite awe into your day:

  • Step outside at night and gaze at the stars, or rise early to watch a sunrise.
  • Spend time in nature – among tall trees, mountains, or near water.
  • Watch a film or short video that features acts of great courage or that show compassion or kindness that moves you.
  • Listen to music that gives you chills or watch powerful artistic performances.
  • Observe people’s extraordinary talents – even highlight clips from talent shows or “best moments” in sports can evoke awe.
  • Study a new subject that opens up your understanding of the world.
  • Notice beauty in small details: a spider’s web, the bark of a tree, your child’s hands, your dog’s eyelashes.
  • Simply slow down, use your senses, and really see what’s around you. Let sights, sounds, and sensations draw you into presence.

However you do it, let awe expand your mind and soften your stress. It’s nature’s way of reminding us that we’re part of something far greater.

Balancing Blood Sugar

Balancing Blood Sugar

By Stephanie Walsh

Posted on June 12, 2025

We’ve all experienced that energy crash after a sugar overload. But how much are those energy rollercoaster rides really effecting your health?

Carbohydrate Metabolism

When you eat any type of carbohydrate – bread, potato, quinoa, candy, fruit, etc. – your body needs to break it down to a usable form for energy. Your saliva and digestive juices start the breakdown process while the liver finishes by converting them to their final form – glucose. The liver then releases glucose into the bloodstream, but it cannot be used for energy until it is taken up by your cells. So when glucose enters the bloodstream, the pancreas releases insulin into the blood to help shuttle glucose into cells to be used for energy.

The more complex a carbohydrate is, the longer it will take to break down and the steadier your blood sugar and energy will be. Simple carbohydrates – such as sugars and refined flours – will convert faster into glucose, creating a spike in blood sugar.

When there is a steady, controlled influx of glucose, there is a stable supply of energy. However, when there is carbohydrate overload or constant spikes of blood sugar your energy, blood sugar, weight, and health all suffer.

Developing Insulin Resistance

Because they are already in a simple form, when you eat sugar or refined flour foods, they create a spike in blood sugar. This creates a spike in insulin production to bring blood sugar within normal range. These spikes, however, can lead to overcompensation – shuttling too much blood sugar into cells. This creates low blood sugar, fatigue, mental fogginess and more sugar cravings. This sends you on an endless rollercoaster ride of energy.

The rollercoaster ride is not your only downfall. When insulin spikes repeatedly, your cells eventually stop listening. Insulin becomes the Chicken Little to your body cells – insulin can only cry emergency for so long! Soon your cells start to reduce their insulin receptors dramatically. A healthy cell has approximately 200,000 insulin receptors while an insulin-resistant diabetic cell has only 2,000! A constant intake of refined flour foods and sugars eventually lead from rollercoaster ride to insulin resistance, the pre-cursor to Type II Diabetes.

Metabolic Syndrome

If your diet is high in refined carbohydrates and sugars, you may be on the path to Type II Diabetes without realizing it. In fact, pre-diabetes can exist for many years before you are aware of the problem. Awareness before a Type II Diabetes diagnosis can set you on the right path. There are certain symptoms that may indicate you have high blood sugar and pre-diabetes:

  • Weight gain around the belly and mid-section

  • High blood pressure

  • High triglycerides

  • Low HDL cholesterol

  • Insulin resistance

If you have been diagnosed with any of the above, ask your doctor about testing your fasting blood glucose and hemoglobin A1C to better understand your blood sugar levels. If you cannot get your blood sugar levels under control, Type II Diabetes may be imminent.

Type II Diabetes

When cells become insulin resistant, your cells can no longer get the energy they need, and glucose stays circulating in the blood. This excess glucose will become toxic to the body if not stored or converted, so the liver converts the excess to triglycerides. In the process of conversion, inflammatory cytokines are also produced. These triglycerides and cytokines can eventually damage small blood vessels to organs. So becoming insulin resistant can lead to high triglycerides, systemic inflammation and organ dysfunction, as well as:

  • High cholesterol

  • High blood pressure

  • Thickening of blood

  • Atherosclerosis

  • Cardiovascular Disease

  • Kidney Disease

  • Fatty Liver Disease

  • Cancer

  • Immune Dysfunction

  • Poor Wound Healing

  • Foot Ulcers

  • Retinopathy

  • Blindness

  • Neuropathy

  • Depression

  • Alzheimer’s Disease

Medical Treatments

If you are diagnosed with Type II Diabetes, you’ll need to monitor your blood sugar. This can range from every now and then to several times per day. Checking your blood sugar requires pricking your finger to get your blood on a test strip, not something for the squeamish!

There are also several medications your doctor may prescribe if you are diagnosed with Type II Diabetes:

  • Medications to improve insulin sensitivity – including Metformin and Thiazolidinediones. These medications have side effects ranging from nausea and diarrhea to increased risk of heart failure and fractures.

  • Medications to reduce blood sugar levels – including DPP-4 inhibitors and GLP-1 receptor antagonists. Possible side effects include nausea and increased risk of pancreatitis.

  • Medications to increase insulin production – including Sulfonylureas and Meglitinides. Common side effects are low blood sugar and weight gain.

  • Medications to prevent reabsorbing sugar from the kidneys – including SGLT2 inhibitors. Side effects may include yeast infections, urinary tract infections, increased urination and hypotension.

  • Insulin Therapy – this involves injecting insulin using a syringe or pen injector. Again, not for the squeamish!

Balancing Blood Sugar

All of the above medications are meant to help balance your blood sugar. That is because imbalanced blood sugar or insulin levels can lead to hormone dysfunction. This in turn can lead to dysfunction of the sex hormones, adrenal glands, thyroid and more. So balanced blood sugar is key to health. Thankfully, medications are not the only way to achieve balance!

Lifestyle Changes for Diabetes

Despite the option of medications, diet and lifestyle modification is still the most important therapeutic component of preventing and reversing Type II Diabetes. In fact, one large study showed that lifestyle intervention reduced the incidence of diabetes by 58% compared to a 31% reduction in patients taking Metformin.

Here are some key lifestyle changes you can start making today to reduce your risk of, or potentially reverse, Type II Diabetes.

  • Consume a whole foods, low glycemic, complex carbohydrates diet.

  • Make sure each meal is also rich in essential fatty acids and high quality protein.

  • Avoid all refined grains and sugars, especially if you are trying to restore your insulin sensitivity.

  • Eat breakfast within one hour of rising.

  • Eat at regular intervals, every 2-4 hours.

  • Exercise for 30-60 minutes every day.

  • Incorporate stress management in to your day.

Supplements for Diabetes

In addition to the lifestyle changes above, certain supplements can actually help you reduce your risk of, or potentially reverse, Type II Diabetes.

  • Vitamin D3 improves metabolism and influences genes that can prevent diabetes.

  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids (EPA and DHA) help improve insulin sensitivity, lower triglycerides and reduce inflammation.

  • Magnesium helps glucose enter cells.

  • Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) helps reduce blood sugar and boost mitochondrial function.

  • Chromium is important for proper sugar metabolism and insulin sensitivity, and can help you make more insulin receptors.

  • Cinnamon helps control blood sugar and improve insulin sensitivity.
