Why Do Some People Instantly Dislike an Empath?

Why Do Some People Instantly Dislike an Empath?

Have you ever met someone and felt them take an instant dislike to you? Or perhaps you’ve had a friend, colleague or even a family member suddenly become cold, resentful or strangely hostile, despite you never having done anything to warrant it.

As Empaths, we feel these things deeply. Even when someone tries to hide their feelings, we can often sense the discomfort, resentment or dislike radiating from them. And if you’re anything like me, you’ve probably spent far too much time asking yourself, “What did I do wrong?” The answer may be… absolutely nothing.

Of course, not everyone is meant to like everyone else. We are all different and naturally gravitate towards certain personalities more than others. But over the years, I have come to realise that there are some very specific reasons why people can become uncomfortable around an Empath.

In fact, some people aren’t reacting to who you are at all; they’re reacting to what your energy stirs within them.

The Empath Holds Up a Mirror

This, I believe, is the biggest reason of all. Empaths have a way of seeing beneath the surface. We often sense what people are feeling, even when they are trying their hardest to hide it. We pick up on insecurities, sadness, anger, fears and the parts of themselves they may not even wish to acknowledge. And that can be deeply uncomfortable.

Most people wear masks from time to time. Even Empaths. (In fact, if you identify as both an Empath and autistic, you will certainly be a masker.) Some do it to fit in, some do it to protect themselves, and some because they fear rejection or judgment. There are even those who have worn their masks for so long that they no longer know who they truly are. Then along comes an Empath. Without saying a word, our energy can shine a light on everything they have buried: their insecurities, their fears, their unresolved pain, their hidden anger and their unspoken truths. This is what I call The Mirror of the Empath.

The person may have no idea why they suddenly feel uncomfortable around you. They simply know that being in your presence stirs something within them. The truth is, they aren’t always reacting to you; they’re reacting to what you unknowingly reflected back to them. The dislike they feel can actually be a dislike of something within themselves.

Your Energy Has Changed

Have you ever noticed that some people seem happier when you’re struggling? Yet the moment you begin healing, growing or stepping into your confidence, they become distant, critical or irritated. This is something many Empaths experience.

As we heal, we change. As we become more authentic, more grounded and more aligned with ourselves, our energy changes too. Some people celebrate this growth, but others find it unsettling. Not everyone is ready for change, not everyone is ready to heal, and not everyone feels comfortable around someone who is evolving when they themselves feel stuck.

Sometimes your growth reminds others of where they are not growing. Sometimes your peace highlights their inner chaos. Sometimes your light illuminates the parts of themselves they are avoiding. And sometimes your energy simply no longer matches theirs. This doesn’t make either person right or wrong; it simply means you are no longer walking the same path.

I often say that when you begin to respect yourself and raise your vibration, your relationships naturally begin to change too. Some people grow with you, others quietly drift away, and some resist your growth altogether because, consciously or unconsciously, your light reminds them of what is possible for them too.

Your Stillness Is Misunderstood

Empaths need time alone. In fact, I would go as far as saying that solitude is not a luxury for an Empath, it’s a necessity. After taking on too much emotional stimulation, our minds and bodies need time to reset. Sometimes we become quiet, sometimes we withdraw, and sometimes we need complete stillness.

The problem is that not everyone understands this. Our need for space can easily be misinterpreted. People may think we’ve become distant, that we’ve lost interest in them or even that we think we’re somehow above them. The truth couldn’t be further from reality.

Most of the time, an Empath isn’t withdrawing from people, they’re simply trying to find their way back to themselves. When we’re emotionally overloaded, even small interactions can feel exhausting. A simple conversation can feel like hard work, and being around noise or emotional intensity can become unbearable. At times, we want nothing more than to retreat into our own quiet world and recharge.

Unfortunately, those who are insecure may interpret our silence as rejection or our need for solitude as a personal insult. They may even become resentful because they cannot understand why we need to retreat in the way we do. Because others don’t feel what we feel, it can be difficult for them to comprehend that our stillness is not a rejection of them, it is simply an act of self-preservation.

A Fourth Reason We Rarely Speak About

Sometimes people dislike an Empath simply because they cannot understand them. Empaths often walk through life differently. We question things, we feel deeply, we need meaningful connections and we notice things that others miss. We value authenticity over appearances and depth over superficiality. In a world that often rewards noise and image, this can make us appear different.

People don’t always know what to do with those who are different. Sometimes they are intrigued, sometimes they are inspired and sometimes they are uncomfortable. Not everyone will understand your sensitivity, and not everyone is supposed to.

So, if someone suddenly cools towards you or seems to dislike you for no obvious reason, try not to take it personally. I know that’s easier said than done because Empaths naturally want to understand and make things right. But not everything is ours to fix. Not everyone who walks away from us is meant to stay, not everyone who misunderstands us is meant to understand us, and not every negative reaction is a reflection of who we are.

Sometimes it is simply the Mirror of the Empath at work.

Keep being kind. Keep being authentic. Keep honouring your need for stillness. And never dim your light simply because it makes someone else uncomfortable. The right people won’t be threatened by your energy, they’ll feel at home in it.

I hope this helps on your Empath journey.

Until next time,

How Breath Affects Empath Wellbeing

How Breath Affects Empath Wellbeing

By Diane Kathrine

Posted on March 19, 2026

If you are someone who feels deeply, who notices the subtle shifts in energy in a room, who carries other people’s emotions as if they were your own, then your breath matters more than you may realise.

As Empaths, we often live in a world that feels loud, fast, and overwhelming. Our minds can be busy. Our nervous systems can feel constantly “on.” You may already know I have written before about breathing exercises to calm the busy Empath mind. But recently, after reading Breath by James Nestor, I felt called to go deeper.

In his book, Nestor explains that many modern humans have forgotten how to breathe properly. He connects poor breathing to anxiety, sleep problems, dental issues, inflammation, and more. What struck me most is how something so simple, something we do every moment of our lives, can either gently support our wellbeing or quietly undermine it. Yet it is a subject that is not being discussed enough.

And this feels especially important for Empaths.

Most people never stop to think about how they are breathing. They just assume that because they are alive, they must be breathing “correctly.” But the way you breathe shapes your body, your mind, and your emotional world.

So are you breathing in a way that truly supports you? Or is your breath shallow and tight?

What Is Shallow Breathing?

Shallow breathing is when the breath stays high in the chest instead of moving deeply into the belly. Instead of the diaphragm (the large muscle under your lungs) doing the work, the upper chest, shoulders, and neck try to take over.

The breath becomes quick, light, and restricted. It may feel like you can’t quite get enough air. You might find yourself sighing often. Or taking sudden big breaths as if you’ve been holding your breath without realising.

For many Empaths, shallow breathing becomes the default. Especially when:

  • You are overthinking.
  • You are absorbing other people’s stress.
  • You are sitting for long periods.
  • You are constantly on your phone or computer.

Shallow breathing is subtle. Easy to miss. But its effects run deep.

Here are some signs your breathing may be shallow:

  • Your breath stays high in your chest.
  • Your shoulders and neck feel tight.
  • You often feel the need to “take a big breath.”
  • You catch yourself holding your breath.
  • You sigh frequently.

Healthy breathing, by contrast, feels light, quiet, and effortless. It flows gently through the nose. The belly and lower ribs expand. There is a steady rhythm.

When we breathe shallowly, it changes more than just our lungs. It changes our chemistry, posture, emotions, and energy.

Let’s explore what that means.

1.It Disrupts Sleep

For Empaths, who need quality rest to process emotions and energy, this matters deeply.

If you breathe through your mouth at night or breathe irregularly, your body struggles to reach deep, restorative sleep.

Even mild snoring or subtle mouth breathing can keep the nervous system slightly alert.

You may sleep for eight hours but wake feeling unrefreshed.

Gentle nasal breathing supports deeper sleep and allows the body to fully switch off.

2. It Keeps Your Nervous System in Survival Mode

Your brain does not know the difference between a real threat and an imagined one.

When your breath is fast and high in the chest, your brain reads this as danger. It activates the stress response. Cortisol and adrenaline rise. Your body prepares to fight or flee.

As an Empath, you may already spend a lot of time in quiet stress, scanning, sensing, anticipating.

Shallow breathing locks you into this state.

Stress creates shallow breathing.

Shallow breathing creates more stress.

It becomes a loop.

When you slow the breath and bring it into the belly, you send a powerful message to your brain: “I am safe.”

And the nervous system begins to soften.

3. It Fuels Anxiety and Overthinking

Fast breathing lowers carbon dioxide levels, which can create sensations like dizziness, tightness, and unease. These sensations can trigger anxious thoughts. Those thoughts then disturb the breath even more.

For Empaths, who already feel deeply and think deeply, this cycle can feel relentless.

When the breath becomes slow and nasal, thoughts naturally quiet. Emotions feel less overwhelming. You become more resilient to the emotional waves around you.

The breath becomes an anchor

4. It Can Leave You Feeling Starved of Energy

When breathing is fast and shallow, carbon dioxide levels in the blood drop too low. This might sound like a good thing, but it’s not.

Carbon dioxide actually helps oxygen move from the blood into your cells. Without enough of it, oxygen stays stuck in the blood instead of nourishing your tissues.

This means you can feel tired, foggy, or drained — even if you are technically getting enough oxygen.

For Empaths, this can feel like emotional exhaustion layered on top of physical fatigue.

Slow, nasal breathing restores balance. It helps your body use oxygen properly. Over time, energy and clarity begin to return.

5. It Drains Your Physical and Mental Stamina

Shallow breathing relies on the small muscles of the neck and chest. This creates tension and extra effort. It also reduces blood flow to the brain.

The result?

  • Mental fog
  • Poor focus
  • Ongoing fatigue

When you restore diaphragmatic breathing, your body becomes more efficient. Energy production improves. Focus sharpens. Physical stamina increases naturally.

6. It Affects Your Body Stability

The diaphragm is not just a breathing muscle. It also helps stabilise your spine.

When it moves properly, it creates gentle internal pressure that supports your back. When breathing is shallow, this support disappears.

Over time, this can lead to:

  • Poor posture
  • Back pain
  • Neck tension
  • Shoulder strain

For Sensitive people who already carry emotional weight, physical tension often mirrors inner strain.

Deep, diaphragmatic breathing restores internal support. The rib cage expands. The spine feels more stable. The body relaxes into better alignment.

So, the question is what can you do about it?

As mentioned, I have shared breathing exercises both in my books and articles, mainly yoga breathing techniques. However, here I want to share with you a Buteyko breathing technique that I came across in James Nestor’s book:

A Simple Practice for Empaths

A gentle Buteyko breathing exercise:

  1. Sit upright, either in a chair or cross-legged.
  2. Imagine a string softly lifting the crown of your head.
  3. Place your hands on your lower ribs.
  4. Inhale quietly through your nose.
  5. Feel your lower ribs expand: front, sides, and back.
  6. Exhale softly through your nose.
  7. Let the ribs move inward naturally.
  8. Keep the breath silent and calm.
  9. Continue for four minutes.

There is no forcing. No strain. No dramatic breathing.

Just soft, steady, nourishing breath.

With consistent practice, your diaphragm strengthens. Carbon dioxide balance improves. Oxygen reaches your tissues more efficiently. Your spine feels supported. Your nervous system settles.

Most importantly, your Sensitive System feels safer.

As Empaths, we cannot always control the world around us. We cannot stop feeling deeply. But we can shape the way we breathe.

And in doing so, we create a quiet, steady foundation inside ourselves.

Your breath is always with you. Let it become your ally.

Until next time,

Diane Kathrine

The Importance of Letting Go of the Expectations You Place on Others

The Importance of Letting Go of the Expectations You Place on Others

By Diane Kathrine

Posted on March 1, 2026

For Sensitive people, especially Empaths, having expectations of others often feels like part of the package. We believe people should treat one another with fairness and respect. We imagine how someone should respond, how they should care, how they should show up, and how they should treat others, because this is how we naturally behave ourselves.

But not everyone experiences the world with the same depth of feeling.

And that’s where the pain begins.

When you feel deeply, things that might roll off someone else’s back can cut you at your core. A careless comment. A missed call. A lack of acknowledgment. These moments can linger for days or even weeks. What feels small to someone else can feel profoundly personal to you.

To make matters worse, Sensitive people are often labelled as “overly sensitive” when they dare to voice how something affected them. Or, instead of speaking up, they stay quiet, worrying their feelings will be misunderstood or dismissed.

When someone lets us down or fails to show up in the way we hoped, it can feel deeply personal, even when it isn’t. And the result is a cycle of disappointment, hurt, and stress. Over time, that emotional strain can affect not only mental well-being but physical health too.

This is why learning to let go of expectations is so important.

Not because we should expect less.

Not because we don’t deserve care.

But because holding tight to expectations often hurts us more than it helps.

Why Expectations Hurt So Much

Expectations often lead to disappointment, not necessarily because people are unkind, but because they are different. They have their own emotional capacities, blind spots, histories, and limitations. Even when they care, they may not know how to express it in the way we would.

The gap between what we expected and what actually happens can become unbearably heavy.

Sensitive people often turn that disappointment inward. We question ourselves. We wonder if we weren’t enough. If we asked for too much. If we misunderstood.

But more often than not, someone’s inability to meet our expectations is not a reflection of our worth. It is simply a reflection of who they are.

We cannot control other people’s emotional awareness.

We cannot control how deeply they feel.

We cannot control how they show up.

And trying to control outcomes, reactions, conversations, or relationships creates constant tension, like holding your breath without realising it.

Letting Go Doesn’t Mean Caring Less

Letting go of expectations does not mean lowering your standards.

It does not mean accepting poor treatment.

And it certainly does not mean silencing your needs.

It means allowing people to be who they are, rather than who you hoped they would be.

Acceptance is essential for emotional well-being. And acceptance isn’t giving up, it’s seeing clearly. It’s allowing relationships to exist as they truly are instead of forcing them into a version we imagined.

The Hard Truth

Yes, most people are doing the best they can with the emotional tools they have.

But it is also true that some people are selfish. Some lack empathy. Some will never reflect on their behaviour or see the impact of their actions.

And no matter how carefully you explain, how gently you communicate, or how much effort you give, they may never change.

That is not your failure.

That is your lesson.

Sometimes letting go of expectations also means letting go of the need to fix, convince, or rescue.

Emotional Freedom

Releasing expectations is an act of emotional freedom.

It doesn’t close your heart, it protects it.

When you stop waiting for others to match your effort, to read your mind, or to offer the same level of care you give, you free yourself from constant disappointment. You stop handing your happiness over to someone else’s behaviour.

Expectations are often attempts to control uncertainty. But control rarely brings peace, it usually creates more anxiety.

When you release expectations:

  • You feel lighter.
  • You feel less resentful.
  • You feel more grounded in yourself.
  • You stop internalising every perceived slight.

People may even surprise you, because without rigid expectations, you leave room for authenticity instead of performance.

A Practice. Not a One-Time Decision

Letting go isn’t something you decide once and master forever.

  • It takes awareness.
  • It takes repetition.
  • It takes compassion for yourself when old patterns return.

Some days it will feel easy.

Other days, disappointment will creep back in.

That’s okay. Growth is never linear.

What matters is remembering this truth:

You do not need to control everything to be okay.

For Sensitive people, this isn’t just self-care, it’s self-protection. It’s removing the quiet permission you may have unknowingly given others to dictate your emotional state.

When you let go of expectations, you reclaim your peace.

You reclaim your emotional energy and you reclaim your freedom. And that is more than worth the work.

I hope this helps on your journey.

Until next time,

Diane

A Crucial Time for Empaths

A Crucial Time for Empaths

By Diane Kathrine

Posted on October 3, 2023

Seems a bold heading, doesn’t it?

Why on earth would this be a crucial time for Empaths?

Well, it is a crucial time for us to stay in charge of our traits, our health and how we feel, for the reason we tend to project the energy of what we feel into the world.

As I know you’re only too aware, Empaths are known to lap up the emotional energy of those in close proximity, but we also project energy out.

Its not just Empaths, everyone has the ability to project out their emotional energy on to others, but in my humble opinion, Empaths tend to be extra good at it. If you get my drift?

I’m sure you will have noticed that when you are in a weird place, feeling agitated, upset or down, the rest of the world seems to adapt to your mood, whether you show your feelings or not.

To give you an analogy,

Have you ever watched Men in Black 2? When Kay reveals that Laura is The Light of Zartha, and he explains why she knows things before they happen, or that when she’s sad it starts to rain? She has the power to change the vibrations around her. And in a roundabout way, this is what many Empaths do. Maybe not in making it rain, but when our moods shift it can change the energy around us, and the way the world presents to us.

As you know, this world is in a seriously weird place. There is a lot of turmoil energy around.

It’s almost as if the world seems to be deconstructing.

Nothing is stable.

There is so much chaos and confusion that it can be hard to properly function.

People seem to be either burying their heads, to what’s going on, or losing their minds.

And that’s why it is so important for us to keep ours.

https://youtu.be/8r55xVg3BdU

AVOID THE DISTRACTIONS

I have said it in other posts, we are being purposely distracted. Distracted from our own power.

Sensitive people, like Empaths, experience this more than most.

Those of us who have been working diligently on self-development, through balancing our mind, body or spirit, will have seen many positive changes in recent times. Our vibration is continually rising; our intuition has increased, as has our ability to manifest, and our moments of blissful clarity are getting bigger and better.

We are more heart centred than ever before. Yet, despite this, we can still easily be pulled down into a low vibrating space without us even realising what’s happening.

Over the recent years, I have noticed this occurring on numerous occasions. I didn’t recognize it at first, and would find myself getting caught up in the drama. But now, I try to stay aware of it as it happens and I know it is not a coincidence. It seems the better the space I am in, the more something tries to pull me out of it. And sometimes it works.

Yes, it could be some type of test, but the fact that every form of media is spewing some seriously dark stuff out from all directions, makes it hard to avoid.

These major distractions really can take us off our game.

KEEPING IT REAL

The thing is, when you’ve cleaned up your thoughts, your energy field and your diet, and you avoid unnecessary negativity, your mind, body and spirit naturally vibrate at a higher frequency. However, you don’t necessarily notice this higher vibration until you are pulled out of it, and when it happens, it feels worse than ever!

If you are one of life’s game changers (Anyone who works on changing themselves for the better, is a game changer.) you will probably be noticing this happening, and if you haven’t, look out for it.

When we are in our heart centre, we project a high vibrating energy out in to the world.

When our vibration lowers, and we get pulled from the heart, we no longer radiate that powerful vibration.

We are all human, and we all need reminders, from time to time, not to engage the madness. No matter how hard it tries to lure us in, and to recognize what is happening.

POSITIVITY BREEDS POSITIVITY

When we are in a high vibrating space, we project that energy out, and it is this energy that will help heal the world by aiding others in raising their own vibration.

No one benefits from the energy of anger or dark emotions.

Those who want to keep the world as a lower vibrating space, do not want us to radiate out powerful vibrations of love or of positivity, so they cleverly orchestrate distractions for us, that lower our vibration.

https://youtu.be/6uFoguAzsI4

Being aware of when any type of trauma trigger is being activated is essential, because they are the fastest way to throw us out of our groove and take us down.

How we behave, act and feel is so important now. Not just to us, but to everyone.

As I said, what we feel, we project out into the world and when taken off centre, our mood shifts to a lower vibration and our awareness is compromised.

My last two posts have been focused on ways to stay in a more emotionally stable place, one by using daylight to balance circadian rhythms, and thus increase our frequency, and two, by using ways to increase the love hormone, oxytocin. But there are also hundreds of other free posts on this blog, all aimed at empowering you lovely Empaths out there.

The more we work to raise our frequency, the better place the world will be for ourselves and for others.

Ok, that’s it for me today.

I do hope this helps on your journey.

Until next time.

Diane.
