Germans Should Prepare For “Tough Years Ahead” Due To Energy Transition, Green Economy Minister Warns

Germans Should Prepare For “Tough Years Ahead” Due To Energy Transition, Green Economy Minister Warns

By ZeroHedge

Posted on August 1, 2023

Germany is facing several tough years due to a combination of transitioning to sustainable energy sources and the rising costs of energy, warned Germany’s Green Economic Affairs Minister Robert Habeck.

The federal minister, who has long called for a radical energy policy change, said that Germany faces “five tough years ahead” and revealed the country will have to borrow to support companies’ energy costs or lose their industry.

“Tough years of green industrial transition will put a burden on people,” Habeck said, noting that the IMF expects the German economy to shrink by 0.3 percent this year.

The German statistical office warned in May that the country was entering a recession, and some big companies are already thinking of moving out of Germany, fueling fears of a loss of industrial production.

Habeck said the situation is due to high energy prices, which he says Germany is feeling more because it was previously used to cheap Russian gas.

High interest rates are also slowing down investment and global trade, which Germany — as an export-dependent country — is especially feeling, according to Habeck.

He said there was no reason to fear the situation, but he did not want to ignore the facts that people’s burdens would increase.

“We are facing a period of great transformation between now and 2030, as Germany moves from a traditional fossil energy-dependent industry to green energy such as hydrogen,” the Green politician explained.

Habeck suggested that energy-intensive companies competing internationally should receive public subsidies for their energy costs to meet the challenges of the transformation and to have enough money to invest.

However, this proposal is not supported by either the coalition partner FDP or the Social Democratic Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

AI Companies Negotiate Landmark Deals To Train Chatbots On MSM News

AI Companies Negotiate Landmark Deals To Train Chatbots On MSM News

By ZeroHedge

Posted on July 5, 2023

When the creators of AI chatbots such as ChatGPT or Google’s Bard want to “teach” them about the world in order to accurately answer questions, they use various news and social media sources to “scrape” content which then “trains” said models. This is why Twitter owner Elon Musk just began throttling accounts which consume a massive amount of content on a daily basis – as it became a free and valuable resource for engineers.

It’s also why AI can be “woke” – as it all depends on the data it’s being trained on, which as we’ve seen, can bias the chatbot towards the political ideology of its creators (for which loopholes were quickly discovered).

Now, the Financial Times reports that the world’s largest tech companies are negotiating with major media outlets to strike landmark deals for the use of news content to train AI chatbots.

These people said that publishers including News Corp, Axel Springer, The New York Times and The Guardian have each been in discussions with at least one of the tech companies.

Those involved in the discussions, which remain in the early stages, added that the deals could involve media organisations being paid a subscription-style fee for their content in order to develop the technology underpinning chatbots such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard.

The talks come as media groups express concern over the threat to the industry posed by the rise of AI, as well as fears over the use of their content by OpenAI and Google without deals in place. Some companies such as Stability AI and OpenAI are facing legal action from artists, photo agencies and coders, who allege contractual and copyright infringement. -FT

According to News Corp CEO Robert Thomson, the media industry’s “collective IP is under threat,” for which news outlets should “argue vociferously for compensation.”

In short – use their content to train your AI without paying, get sued.

Current discussions have revolved around a pricing model in the $5 million to $20 million per-year level, according to one industry exec.

According to Thomson, AI was “designed so the reader will never visit a journalism website, thus fatally undermining that journalism.”

The negotiations, if successful, would establish a blueprint for news organizations dealing with generative AI companies worldwide.

“Copyright is a crucial issue for all publishers,” said the FT, which is also in negotiations over the matter. “As a subscriptions business, we need to protect the value of our journalism and our business model. Engaging in constructive dialogue with the relevant companies, as we are, is the best way to achieve that.”

According to the report, media industry executives want to avoid the pitfalls of the early internet, when they undermined their own business models by giving away so much news for free, while Big Tech companies such as Google and Facebook then accessed that information to grow their multibillion-dollar advertising platforms.

Google recently announced an AI search option, which provides users with an information box above its traditional list of web links. The company has been leading the negotiations with UK news outlets, Guardian and NewsUK – two of many such outlets that parent company Alphabet has existing relationships with.

According to Mathias Döpfner, CEO of Politico-owned Axel Springer, the industry should create a “quantitative” model similar to that used by the music industry to allow nightclubs and streaming services to pay record labels each time a track is played. This would require AI companies to agree to disclose internal metrics on media content usage, which they don’t currently do.

“We need an industry-wide solution,” said Döpfner, adding “We have to work together on this.”

Döpfner, whose Berlin-based media company also owns the German tabloid Bild and the broadsheet Die Welt, said an annual agreement for unlimited use of a media company’s content would be a “second best option”, because that model would be harder for small regional or local news outlets to take advantage of. -FT

“Google has put a licensing deal on the table,” said one executive at a newspaper group. “They have accepted the principle that there needs to be payment . . . but we have not got to the point of talking zeros. They have acknowledged that there is a money conversation that we need to have over the next few months, which is the first step.”

That said, Google called the report over a potential licensing deal “not accurate,” adding that it’s “very early days and we’re continuing to work with the ecosystem, including news publishers, to get their input.”

According to Google, they’re in “ongoing conversations” with news outlets, both large and small, in the US, UK and Europe, while it’s Bard AI is being trained on “publicly available information,” which could include paywalled websites.

Developing a financial model will likely be extremely difficult according to publishing leaders. Senior executives at one major publisher said that the news industry was ‘working retroactively’ because tech companies had launched these products – which scrape their content – without a heads up.

“There was no discussion, and so now we have to try to get paid after it happened,” said one executive. “The way they launched these products, the total secrecy, the fact that there is zero transparency, no communication before it happened, there’s reasons to be pretty pessimistic.”

France In Crisis For Fifth Night As Violence Spreads To Neighboring Countries

France In Crisis For Fifth Night As Violence Spreads To Neighboring Countries

Former President Trump was correct about France many years ago. He said, “I wouldn’t go to France. Because France is no longer France …This world better be very careful and they better get very tough and very smart.”

As the unrest in France sparked by the police killing of a teenager of North African descent continued for the fifth day, Paul Joseph Watson offered his view of why social unrest has quickly spread nationwide. And spoiler alert, unlike French officials who blame “social media,” PJW said, “This is what happens when you absorb millions of migrants into a European county at an accelerated rate pace — with zero plan — with zero prospects for ever integrating them.”

Rioters burned vehicles and buildings and looted stores nationwide for the fifth consecutive night. Police arrested 719 people by the early hours of Sunday, according to the French interior ministry.

Reuters noted the chaos was “less intense overnight” compared with the 1,300 people arrested on Friday night, suggesting riots are dying down after more than 45,000 police officers, as well as dozens of military armored vehicles, were deployed across the country to squash the violence.

President Emmanuel Macron canceled his visit to Germany and met with officials Sunday to develop strategies to suppress some of the worst violence the country has seen since the 2018 “Yellow Vest” protests.

Here’s footage of the chaos from last night:

Vincent Jeanbrun, mayor of the southern Paris suburb of L’Hay-les-Roses, said rioters tried to assassinate him and his family.

“Last night, a milestone was reached in horror and ignominy. My home was attacked and my family was the victim of an assassination attempt,” he wrote on social media.

Meanwhile, social media reports showed violence is spreading to neighboring countries of Switzerland and Belgium.

Congressional Report Details Blocking Sunlight To Save The Planet From “Global Warming”

Congressional Report Details Blocking Sunlight To Save The Planet From “Global Warming”

By ZeroHedge

Posted on July 4, 2023

After years of dishing out abuse and accusations to those who sounded the alarm on geoengineering, the federal government itself has published a major report detailing ways to block the sun to mitigate non-existent “global warming.” This Technocrat initiative seeks to shrink economic activity by controlling energy, food and water. It will not save the world, but rather will destroy it.

The accompanying White House statement was quick to distance itself from the eye-opening report, which in political terms means they are actually seriously considering it.

“Importantly, this report does not signify any change in policy or activity by the Biden-Harris Administration, which remains focused on reducing emissions, increasing resilience, advancing environmental justice, and achieving true energy security. Release of this report fulfills a Congressional mandate, and there are no plans underway to establish a comprehensive research program focused on solar radiation modification.” — Technocracy News & Trends Editor Patrick Wood

Despite the European Commission’s recent warning that large-scale interventions such as solar engineering to reverse “climate change” could have “unintended consequences,” the White House published a new report Friday indicating that the Biden administration wants to manipulate planetary systems to block the sunlight to save the planet.

The congressionally mandated report released by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy shows the Biden administration is very eager to explore “geoengineering” methods to block sunlight because they allege the planet is burning and there’s an imminent climate crisis that will destroy the world.

“A program of research into the scientific and societal implications of solar radiation modification (SRM) would enable better-informed decisions about the potential risks and benefits of SRM as a component of climate policy, alongside the foundational elements of greenhouse gas emissions mitigation and adaptation,” the White House report said.

The report continued, “SRM offers the possibility of cooling the planet significantly on a timescale of a few years.”

In a statement, the White House said, “There are no plans underway to establish a comprehensive research program focused on solar radiation modification.”

There is no official government policy that was attached to the report. The administration noted Congress ordered the report.

The report was released one day after the European Commission outlined the potential risks and “unintended consequences” of manipulating planetary systems to fight global warming.

The commission warned:

In the context of accelerated global warming, deliberate large-scale intervention in the Earth’s natural systems (referred to as “geoengineering”), such as solar radiation modification, is attracting more attention. However, the risks, impacts and unintended consequences that these technologies pose are poorly understood, and necessary rules, procedures and institutions have not been developed.

Some of these risks include:

These technologies introduce new risks to people and ecosystems, while they could also increase power imbalances between nations, spark conflicts and raises a myriad of ethical, legal, governance and political issues.

Blocking the sun’s rays globally with artificial particles in the name of “climate change” is gaining traction. However, there’s too much risk involved that could possibly harm biodiversity and agriculture on a global scale. The fact that this technology could alter global weather patterns and the Biden administration wants to explore it — is frightening.

… and Mr. Burns from the animated television series The Simpsons tried this.

Toxic Wildfire Smoke Blankets Ten States As Independence Day Weekend Begins

Toxic Wildfire Smoke Blankets Ten States As Independence Day Weekend Begins

By ZeroHedge

Posted on 07/02/2023

As the Fourth of July weekend approaches, tens of millions of Americans are heading off today to either sandy beaches or resort communities in the mountains. Some folks are staying home or traveling short distances because “Bidenomics” has miserably failed and bankrupted mid/low-tier households who can no longer afford an Airbnb or hotel in a resort area. But the one thing in common that millions across the Mid-Atlantic and up and down the Northeast regions are all experiencing into the holiday weekend is the lingering wildfire smoke from Canada.

The National Weather Service issued air-quality alerts over parts of the Midwest, Great Lakes, central Appalachians, Northeast, and Mid-Atlantic through the weekend.

“Canadian wildfire smoke is expected to continue impacting portions of the northeastern quadrant of the U.S. over the next few days,” NWS wrote in a Friday morning update.

NWS had some good news: “However, air quality is expected to slowly improve due to a combination of thunderstorm activity and dispersion of the smoke as we head into the weekend.”

Still, toxic air quality alerts stretch from Michigan to Ohio, West Virginia to Pennsvyina to Maryland, Washington, DC, Virginia, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, and into the lower New England area.

The unhealthy air is terrible for people with heart or lung disease, older adults, children, and teens. Pittsburgh had the worst air quality this morning.

Instead of blaming “climate change” for everything… Maybe Canada’s 500 raging wildfires have resulted from bad fire management over the last few decades. Plus, it’s an El Niño year…

Solar Cycle 25’s Maximum Might Arrive Earlier And Hit Harder

Solar Cycle 25’s Maximum Might Arrive Earlier And Hit Harder

By ZeroHedge

Posted on 06/25/2023

Solar Cycle 25 has been underway since April 2019. Ever since the cycle began, the sun has become more active, unleashing solar flares, coronal mass ejections, and geomagnetic storms, with at least one scientist warning solar maximum could arrive ahead of schedule, and that’s not great news for the digital economy here on Earth.

The current solar cycle has a forecasted peak sometime in 2025. In December 2022, the total number of sunspots was at its highest in eight years, indicating solar activity was ramping up. Earlier this year, scientists observed twice as many sunspots — red flags that solar maximum could be nearing.

Another indication of increased solar activity is the number and intensity of solar flares:

In 2022, there were fivefold more C-class and M-class solar flares than there were in 2021, and year on year, the number of the most powerful, X-class solar flares is also increasing, according to SpaceWeatherLive.com. The first half of 2023 logged more X-class flares than in all of 2022, and at least one has directly hit Earth. (Solar flare classes include A, B, C, M and X, with each class being at least 10 times more powerful than the previous one.) — Live Science

Over the years, we’ve explained solar flares can spark geomagnetic storms and cause disruptions to satellites and even power grids.

What’s concerning is a solar physicist at the University of College London, Alex James, told Live Science that the sun’s increase in solar activity is a warning sign the solar maximum could arrive by the end of this year. He said the initial forecast was for 2025.

All this evidence suggests that Solar Cycle 25 is “going to peak earlier, and it’s going to peak higher than expected,” James said.

Other solar physicists have told the science publication very similar forecasts. They warned: “We are poorly prepared.”

The federal government became increasingly serious about potential grid-down events produced by solar storms with a 2016 executive order signed by the Obama Administration titled “Coordinating Efforts to Prepare the Nation for Space Weather Events.”

Lab-Grown Meat Gets Green Light On US Menus

Lab-Grown Meat Gets Green Light On US Menus

By ZeroHedge

Posted on 06/25/2023

The World Economic Forum’s dietary blueprint for the masses is becoming a reality as lab-grown meat, bugs, and plant-based foods are quickly being adopted under the guise of solving “climate change.” The latest move by elites and governments to reset the global food supply chain is US regulators approving the sale of meat cultivated from chicken cells. This makes the US the second country worldwide, besides Singapore, to approve the sale of lab-grown fake meat.

The Agriculture Department approved Upside Foods and Good Meat to begin selling “cell-cultivated” or “cultured” chicken meat from labs in supermarkets and restaurants.

“Today’s watershed moment for the burgeoning cultivated meat, poultry and seafood sector, and for the global food industry,” Good Meat said in a statement.

Upside Foods CEO Uma Valeti said cultured meat in the US will “fundamentally change how meat makes it to our table.”

“Instead of all of that land and all of that water that’s used to feed all of these animals that are slaughtered, we can do it in a different way,” said Josh Tetrick, co-founder and chief executive of Eat Just, which operates Good Meat.

WEF alarmists have made it clear they believe a reset of the global food supply chain is needed to solve climate change.

WEF stressed that “we urgently need sustainable technologies and methods to improve our current food systems and use of land for agriculture.” Their ultimate goal is to curb meat consumption from livestock on farms to lab-grown meat, bugs, and plant-based foods.

“The globalists are at it again,” Rep. Mike Flood (R-Neb.) tweeted earlier this year.

Good Meat’s products are set to hit an undisclosed restaurant in Washington, DC, while Upside’s chicken will be launched at a restaurant in San Francisco. It’s only a matter of time before the fake meat hits grocery stores.

As for gauging the popularity of lab-grown meat, look at the giant flop plant-based foods have been in the US:

“The bulls in the industry, I think, had a very wild, very optimistic estimate of how big the market could get.

“There was a lot of exuberance in this category. It was new, it was different, it was on trend.

“But the consumer environment is tough, and this stuff is not cheap… It’s going to take time to change cultural practices. It’s not going to happen overnight,” John Baumgartner, an analyst at Mizuho Securities, recently told clients.

WEF’s push to directly or indirectly ram through climate policy on the corporate and government level is happening while these elites who supposedly run the world fly around in luxury private jets and sail across oceans in superyachts.

And it remains uncertain what the health consequences might be 5-10 years into the future due to the consumption of artificial meat…

Oh yea, and there’s this: “Carbon Footprint Of Lab-Grown Beef ‘Orders Of Magnitude’ Worse Than Traditionally Raised.”

So is fake meat really about saving the planet? Or is there another agenda?

Gold-Bar Vending Machines Rolled Out At South Korean Convenience Stores

Gold-Bar Vending Machines Rolled Out At South Korean Convenience Stores

Buying physical precious metals is a time-proven method of securing generational wealth while reckless central bankers debase currencies and ignite the worst inflation storm in a generation. Gold and silver investing has long been seen as a hedge against inflation and a store of value against currencies. Access to physical precious metals is challenging and usually involves a bullion dealer. Sometimes online dealers take weeks to receive the delivery.

South Korean convenience store GS Retail, with 10,000 locations, has understood the soaring demand for “sound money” and wants to enhance accessibility. The company rolled out gold bar vending machines with offerings in five sizes, weighing 0.13 ounces to 1.3 ounces, according to UPI News Korea.

“The most popular gold bar is the smallest, the 0.13-ounce one, which is currently priced at around $225,” a GS Retail representative told the media outlet.

“People in their 20s and 30s appear to be the main buyers, purchasing physical gold as an investment vehicle, especially in times such as these, when its value is continuing to rise,” the representative said.

GS has rolled out 29 gold bar vending machines with plans to increase to 50 by the end of the year.

A combination of banking crises in the US and Europe, global slowdown fears, persistent inflation, and depreciating currencies has led to surging demand for physical gold in the first quarter of the year. Even central banks are on a buying spree.

“Niggling inflation and the SVB crisis seem to have caused more people to be interested in anti-inflationary assets such as gold.

“But a gold bar purchased at a convenience store seems more like something done in fun rather than as a means for serious investment. I believe the popularity of these gold bars is mainly due to its easy accessibility, at convenience stores no less,” Inha University Professor Lee Eun-hee said in a phone interview.

It’s all about accessibility. Just like there are cryptocurrency ATMs, the next wave might be precious metals vending machines, though don’t put any of these machines in US Democrat cities because thieves will be all over them.
