What If the Meaning of Life Is in the Body?

What If the Meaning of Life Is in the Body?

How would your day-to-day life change if you knew your sole purpose in this life was to be in your body well?

The meaning of life is a big concept, of course, and no one has ever been able to satisfactorily answer what, exactly, it is. And yet many of us still wonder what it is we’re doing here, what our purpose is, and what we must accomplish during the short time we have on Earth.

Some believe we should pray, connect with God, and join with divinity. Others believe we must follow the rules of a religion to have a good life. Some of us believe there is no meaning; we’re just here following our animal instincts. From other perspectives, our higher self has some plan for us—but we don’t ever get to find out what the plan is.

What if the meaning of life was a little simpler than all that? What if the meaning of life is being in a body well?

Discovering Your “Spark” Through Lived Experience

The Pixar movie Soul addresses this very question through an exploration of death, the afterlife, and the before-life, when we are souls getting ready to come down to Earth and begin our lives. In the movie, Joe Gardner is a musician who finds himself suddenly dead on the very day he’s supposed to play jazz with his hero. He connects with a soul named 22 in the before-life who has no interest at all in becoming alive, and the two scheme to get Joe back into his body and allow 22 to avoid having to go through the bother of living a life.

The two work to help 22 find her “spark,” which is the inspiration with which she will live her life on Earth (so that she can give it to Joe). The two spend a lot of time trying to figure out what a “spark” actually is. Joe is sure his is jazz music, while 22 has never felt interested in any of the mundane tasks of human life. Through a series of hijinks, the two end up on Earth, with 22 inhabiting Joe’s body and Joe stuck for a little while in the body of a cat. While in Joe’s body, 22 experiences things she couldn’t in the before-life that introduce her to concepts like music, art, performance, and so on. She gets to eat pizza. She walks and feels the breeze from a subway vent. She collects a maple seed pirouetting from a tree. She listens to music, feeling the rhythm with a body she’d never had before. And, sure enough, she finds her spark.

The movie carefully avoids defining the meaning of life, but there is a moment in the movie when the beings of the before-life explain that our purpose is not about having a particular “thing” to accomplish. It’s more about the desire to experience life on Earth, in a body.

The Meaning of Life as Experiencing Your Body

Some people are so sure they know the purpose of life that they devote their entire existence to worship through abstinence. They don’t drink, barely eat, and never have sex. Most of their time is spent in deep contemplation and meditation. What if one of these people made it to the afterlife expecting a great reward, only to discover they’d gotten it completely wrong and needed to go back and try again? What if the meaning of life is about experiencing rather than denying your body?

There are plenty of theories about what happens before and after life, but the one thing we know for sure is that we have some limited amount of time to exist in a body. Even if our consciousness continues in some heaven-like place, it’s without a body that can feel pleasure or suffering. If we are reborn into endless new lives, we only get this body, this life, once.

Emotions are physical, after all. Big emotions like sadness, joy, and rage are fundamentally physical. We may have thoughts about them, but they are called feelings because we feel them. Whatever we can think or judge or imagine about our before-lives and afterlives, we likely can’t feel them.

There is a funny moment in Soul when Joe and 22 are experimenting with the different theoretical experiences that could help 22 find her spark. They come across a piece of theoretical pizza. They try to eat it, but they can’t smell or taste it, and when they put it in their mouths, the piece of pizza pops, fully formed, right back out of their behinds. They can experience almost any theoretical reality in the before-life, but they can’t smell, taste, or touch anything. These are the gifts we can only have during the short time when we exist within a body.

So, what if our work here is not so much about changing the world or leaving some type of mark, but simply experiencing the world? Having empathy, connection, loss, grief, joy, and pain? How would your day-to-day life change if you knew your sole purpose in this life was to be in your body well?

The Meaning of Life

The Meaning of Life

Just as there were rules to understand in the Old Reality, there are rules which are best adopted when taking action in the New Reality.

The Old Reality was about gaining courage and developing intellect. The New Reality is about unconditional love and inner wholeness.

Wholeness is personally-inspired integrity without the "shoulds" that others may try to impose upon you.

The frequency of consciousness in the New Reality is heart-centered. Unconditional love comes naturally; you need only let it flow through your heart and allow that energy to be who you are.

When you shift to the expanded consciousness of the New Reality, the universe reorganizes itself around you to reflect that higher reality. Externally-imposed rules are replaced by internal, love-based choices.

To become whole is to become harmoniously fully-functional. In such a reality, you treat yourself and others with unconditional love and care. To care less than that for yourself, or less than that for others, would mean being less than whole.

You are an expression of Infinite Being as it experiences itself from all possible perspectives. Your perspective is unique, as is everyone else's. That is the point of the whole exercise - for Infinite Being to experience life from as many perspectives as possible.

Unity in Diversity

In order to best support this primary mission of human experience, we need to both celebrate our own uniqueness and support others in their efforts to develop their own skills and talents. Unity is our spiritual nature, yet it is found through celebrating our diversity in the common cause of developing our potential to the fullest.

The One is the All and, as parts of the All, we are essentially the One. At the deepest level of consciousness, we are Infinite Being.

Everyone's path is unique because that's the way life was designed. There is no one-size-fits-all philosophy. However, we can learn about the universal laws that will help us achieve our potential in life.

Your mind is non-physical and therefore has higher capabilities than your physical brain. Your mind is immortal and it grows with experience. We are each on our own pathways back to the One source from which we originally came. To get there, we continually grow in consciousness by experiencing life.

The meaning of life is to grow in consciousness.

Examining the Meaning of Life

Examining the Meaning of Life

In a desire to penetrate the meaning of life, we may open our awareness to the creative reality of our own perspective. How we think and feel about everything and everyone is how we create our own energy signature, which is the vibratory presence that we project throughout our being. The vibratory quality of this energy is returned to us in our experiences through the energetic patterns that we attract. These patterns are held in our subconscious in alignment with our predominant perspective.

Each of us has a telepathic way of imagining what is real for us. Our imagined participation in scenarios creates experiences defined by our personal perspectives of chosen vibratory frequencies and polarity. We create our own realization of what is real for us. Realization can result from the resolution and release of fear that is held in our limiting beliefs about ourselves. Realizing, accepting, releasing and transcending our fears allows us to have greater clarity and understanding. It opens our awareness to greater realities. In this vibratory environment, we can walk onto a new path of greater vitality and creative power.

Our vibratory environment has its own spectrum of vibrations that we live within. When we are in synchronization with it, we have a stronger presence and radiance of our essence. If we lose touch with our essence, we become more fearful, because more of life becomes unknown. We become unaware of our inner guidance. If we feel this, it’s time to do an honest evaluation of our perspective on life. Any thoughts and feelings that take away vitality and joy are based on fear and are negative. We can feel this energy and know what it is.

Living within a plasma environment of expressions of infinite consciousness, we can open our awareness as far as we’re willing to go. If we have residual negativity, it becomes known, and we can resolve it. As humans we are unaware of this energy and its qualities, but it is within and around us, and we can open ourselves to its awareness. It communicates through the heart of our Being. This is where we are fearless and filled with gratitude and joy. It is where we experience love, compassion and the enhancement of all life. Without fear of any kind, we can know and realize our natural state of being and the substance of the energetic realm that we inhabit. This is the beginning of knowing the meaning of our life.

The Doorway to the Meaning of Life

The Doorway to the Meaning of Life

By Owen Waters

Wandering through life looking for its meaning can be a heart-rending task. You begin life looking to your parents for meaning, then to your teachers and friends until, one day, you're grown-up, educated, and still clueless.

You stand there, thinking that there has to be a reason why you're here on this earth because you are constantly haunted from within by a sense of knowing that a reason really does exist. If only you could remember what it was.

At some point in your life, you look up from the hypnotizing clamor of daily existence and seek meaning in that which is above the physical realm of existence. In that moment, when your attention is focused on whatever higher consciousness may bring, you are receptive to new ideas and new information.

My life has been spent in pursuit of the awareness that there is a whole universe of discovery within each person's higher awareness, just waiting to be explored. Earlier in life, when I was an employee, I'd often sit at my desk and drift away mentally into more interesting planes of awareness.

Later, as a business owner, I was able to find quality time for some really deep reflection. I used to rise bright and early for a fascinating morning of study and meditation and then roll into the office, ready to begin work, at the crack of noon!

Today, when people ask me about how to find the meaning in their lives, the first thing I do is point out the doorway to their own personal world of inner knowledge. The doorway is within your heart and it leads from the world of physical tumult into spiritual realms of inner peace and revelation.

You have only to detach from the stress and turmoil of daily living to enter your own heart consciousness, feel the love there which patiently awaits you, and move through the doorway into a higher awareness.

It is in that state of higher awareness that you discover the unique meaning of your life. It is there that you find the peace of mind that always eluded you. It is there that the light of inner wisdom joins with the love that flows freely throughout the universe.

This union of love and light brings forth the enlightenment for which all sentient beings strive, and it all begins with unconditional love. Acceptance of yourself and everyone as you are, followed by gratitude for life itself and the experience that this life brings, opens up the doorway of the heart and leads onward into the realms of self-discovery.
