Consider Wu Wei, typically translated as “effortless action” or “action without a doer.”

What people think it means: “you should relax, be unattached to the outcome and go with the flow.”

What it actually means: dissolve the self, so that there’s no “doer.” The self isn’t the pilot of the organism, so the organism keeps walking around just fine

Consider the following conversation:

Unenlightened Anne: “I’ll be at the gym tomorrow at 10 am. Will you come too?”

Unenlightened John who tries to be “Wu Wei”: relaxes, takes a breath and says “yes, I promise I’ll be there. See you then!”

Next day: John doesn’t show up. After all, it was John’s self that told Anne’s self that he would show up. But John’s self isn’t the pilot; John’s organism actually makes the decisions and it never committed to going to the gym. Any time people talk, it’s their self talking, and their self isn’t the pilot.

Now consider the alternative:

Unenlightened Anne: “I’ll be at the gym tomorrow at 10 am. Will you come too?”

Enlightened Tom: says “yes” or “no” or “I don’t know yet” with actual Wu Wei, i.e. without a self being involved. So here Tom’s organism is speaking, as opposed to the previous example where John’s self spoke for John’s organism. If Enlightened Tom says yes, then most likely he will show up, because it was his organism saying yes and then his organism will show up. Although if the next day Tom suddenly falls ill, he may still stay home and break his word.

While we’re giving these gym examples, let’s look at two more cases:

Unenlightened Anne: “I’ll be at the gym tomorrow at 10 am. Will you come too?”

Unenlightened but disciplined and well-raised David: “yes, I’ll be there!”

Next day: David’s organism doesn’t want to go, but David’s organism has been raised with the principle of “you must keep your word or others won’t like you.” Because of that, David’s organism decides to comply with the promise David’s self has made, and David goes to the gym.

Basically, David’s self successfully guilt tripped David’s organism into going to the gym. That said, “conserve energy and be comfortable” is part of David’s organism, so maybe this is for the best. Or maybe not -- maybe the organism really did need the rest.

David is more likely to become a successful body builder, or billionaire, than an enlightened person is: David’s self keeps making commitments and his organism keeps hobbling along. Now you see why the self exists in the first place. That said, David is also much more likely to seriously injure himself, or gamble away his money, or get a burnout. And David will experience lots of anxiety and craving.

David Goggins is the extreme version of this.

And as the final gym example:

Unenlightened Anne: “I’ll be at the gym tomorrow at 10 am. Will you come too?”

Unenlightened but mindful Musashi: breathes, feels, observes what’s going on inside and then says “sorry, I’m exhausted and need to rest. I’ll skip tomorrow, but I’ll see you next Saturday at the gym.”

This is still Musashi’s self talking for his organism, but here Musashi is feeling into his organism. So he’s much more likely to notice that his organism is exhausted and genuinely needs rest.

To see how this plays out in cultural archetypes, consider two iconic warriors:

The stereotypical knight goes: “halt, evildoer! I, Sir Galahad, knight of the round table and in service to king Arthur, will stop you and your foul act! I will do so in the name of God!” This person is carrying around a massive self, and we consider him uncool and slightly ridiculous as a result. We also think of him as slow, and he really is, because his big self is slowing down his actions.

Now consider a stereotypical Ronin, a Japanese Samurai without a master. He wears normal clothes, talks little and moves from place to place. He may not even tell you his name. But when action needs to be taken, he takes it unflinchingly and without second thought. Then, without saying a word or spinning a personal narrative, he moves on. This person has little or no self, and as a result we consider him very cool and extremely effective. We also think of him as very fast, and indeed he is because there’s no or there’s little self slowing him down.
